Grameenphone and Fortumo launch direct carrier billing in Bangladesh

gameenphone Bangladeshi mobile operator, Grameenphone, has partnered with Fortumo to launch direct carrier billing (DCB). The deal will allow all digital content merchants to collect carrier billing payments from Grameenphone subscribers through Fortumo’s Hosted DCB platform. Moreover, one integration to Fortumo enables payments with Grameenphone and hundreds of other mobile operators across the world.

Only 0.2% of the population in Bangladesh have credit cards while over 40% of people have a smartphone. This creates a challenge for online merchants as people struggle to pay for digital content in an accessible way. Direct carrier billing resolves the issue by charging payments to consumers’ mobile bill – postpaid or prepaid SIM card.

Carrier billing gives digital service providers access to the most widely available and simplest mechanism for collecting payments from their content. Rather than integrating with each mobile operator separately, Fortumo enables carrier billing connections at scale and through one integration. We are excited to expand our partnership with Grameenphone and bring direct carrier billing to Bangladesh.
